YOUTH PARLIAMENT 2013
Glen Waverley Secondary College
ACTION PLAN
Purpose
Victorian law governing police pursuits do not adequately reflect the importance of human life. This is a sentiment that the Glen Waverley team recognises and is passionate about.
Despite rising number of deaths or incidents caused by pursuits, government responses have been minimal and largely ineffective in reducing these numbers.
When given the chance to shape Victoria's future, our team saw the opportunity to improve current legislation to preserve the safety of the Victorian public.
Proposed Legislation
Police Pursuit Regulations and Responsibilities
The Glen Waverley team dedicated their time to ensuring the basic rights of safety and responsibility for Victorians on the road were upheld. The following clauses of the Bill help work towards this goal:
Brief summary of main points
The first objective of the Bill is regulate the conditions under which police pursuits are appropriate.
It would also result in the formation of a committee whose main purpose is to investigate incidents and determine matters of liability and compensation.
Finally, the Bill would revise the current standards under which roadblocks are executed. This would include the responsibility of police to inform civilians of the circumstances and risks of participation, as well as the option to not participate.
The objective of these revisions are to recognise the importance of a human life and incorporate these considerations into policy.
Outcomes
How we can achieve this goal
Our team recognises the impact of people who are mobilised for a cause. The ideas we have presented can truly benefit the Victorian public and ensure higher standards of safety and responsibility.
We believe that the most effective way to achieve this goal is through the involvement of the public. With this in mind, we encourage anyone with the capacity to help us pursue our vision to contact us with information or support.
